Nesting Pueo
Big Island, Hawaii
The pueo, or Hawaiian Short-eared Owl, is endemic to Hawaii and is a subspecies of the widespread short-eared owl. I captured an image of a pueo nesting in the grass during sunset in this photo. It is hard to go unnoticed when photographing these amazing birds. This pueo was staring at me as I took a few pictures of him nesting in thick grass on the Big Island of Hawaii. Unlike most owls, the pueo hunts during the day and can be seen hunting for rodents in the grasslands and forests of the Island. Photo © copyright by The Edge Explorer.
